Visual conveying how the ensemble does not mimic or copy its context. Instead, it exhibits a materiality and clarity that resonates with and enhances its surroundings.
Visual depicting the completion of Schoolhouse Lane which creates an inviting vista toward Ebrington Gardens. The central pavilion features upper-level glazing, flooding the workspaces with abundant natural light and creating a dynamic environment. Deep reveals to the 'shopfronts' recreate the intimate, interstitial spaces present on existing historic buildings along this streetscape and beyond.
Axonometric — highlighting a variety of potential workspace and retail units ranging from 50-180sqm (gross internal floor area) to serve local micro and small enterprises. The central glazed pavilion shown in blue can be sub-divided into five units with the option of a mezzanine pending the occupiers’ requirements.
Axonometric — the commercial aspect of the approval serves as both a feature gateway building to the exposed main entrance of the former barracks and an active, yet more intimate frontage, completing Schoolhouse Lane.
Sketch elevations and perspective of gateway entrance — the ensemble is physically bound by the plinth, yet coherent through considered and consistent detailing and a restrained material palette — taking inspiration from site specific design cues.
Primary sketch illustrating the completion of Schoolhouse Lane, with Ebrington Gardens framed in the distance. The masonry plinth of the proposal references the scale and solidity of the existing buildings opposite. The building form steps back at the upper levels to provide relief while maintaining a scale appropriate to Schoolhouse Lane.
Sketch perspective down Schoolhouse Lane. The minimalist design and modern materials create a striking contrast with the historic buildings’ traditional architectural features, accentuating their beauty. Subtle historic design cues specific to the site reveal themselves through correlating horizontal and vertical datums, deep reveals, bold gables and roof profiles, and coherent rhythms and proportions of openings.

Schoolhouse Lane serves as a vibrant commercial addition to the Ebrington masterplan, thoughtfully merging modern design with the historic charm of the former barracks site. Located at a key entry point, this project creates a dynamic and inviting gateway that respects the scale of surrounding historic structures while addressing the varied topography along Hill Avenue.

Designed to be a flexible commercial space, Schoolhouse Lane caters to a range of uses, serving local micro and small enterprises, with units varying from 50 to 180 sqm.

The architectural ensemble is physically bound by the plinth, yet coherent through considered and consistent detailing and a restrained material palette — drawing inspiration from site-specific design cues. Its minimalist design intentionally creates a striking contrast against the historic buildings’ traditional architectural features, accentuating the beauty of all. Yet, an underlying rich tapestry of historic design nuances subtly reveals itself; correlating horizontal and vertical datums, deep reveals for respite, bold gables / roof profiles, coherent rhythm and proportions of openings to name a few.

By incorporating contemporary elements alongside historical references, Schoolhouse Lane functions as more than just a commercial space — it acts as a welcoming gateway that completes the northeastern edge of the masterplan. This approach not only respects Ebrington’s heritage but also introduces a new, modern energy, activating the area as a dynamic hub that supports local businesses and enhances the community’s connection to this historic site.
